Growing up in North Jersey has made me somewhat of an Indian food snob, but Nawab in Bethlehem has become one of my favorites. Located on the hip southside of town, this cheerful byob has a diverse selection of indian specialities for the carnivorous and vegetarian crowd, prepared fresh, and as spicy as you like it. Hot actually means hot here, which is a rarity.
The ambiance at Nawab is cozy and cheerful, with tasteful lighting and pink, shimmery accents that are a refreshing change from the minimalist trend taking over many contemporary restaurants. If you liked the train on the Darjheeling Limited, you'll love Nawab for the decor alone.
For first timers, or for indecisive diners like me, I recommend getting the Thali dinner, which features a chef's sampling of several dishes, raita, rice, naan bread, tea or coffee, and dessert. Oh, and a samosa. Yes, it is quite a feast, but it all comes on a very cool looking silver tray, and the portions are tappas size. There are many types of Thali available, including a Special Mixed Grill withTandoori baked treats like sheekh kabab, shrimp tandoori, and chicken tikka to name a few.
If you are looking for good Indian food in Eastern PA, definitely check out Nawab!
