our band, total quality institute had a show at southpaw, in brooklyn. southpaw is located in the park slope area of brooklyn. this may be the best venue we played, despite the low numbers of crowd members.
the day started off kind of shakey, as we pulled in to load blocking a fire hydrant. i thought nothing of it. we hung around casually. upon leaving the bathroom my friend ran in to tell me the fire department needed the hydrant. so, i ran out and drove away and parked. parking was no problem after that.
as was expected, there were plenty of lovely shops and restaurants on the street(5th avenue). so, we walked it, and settled on a sushi place called ginza, a few blocks down and across the street. my friend andrew bought me sushi and sapporo for my birthday. it was good. i got a nice picture of myself with a waitress i plan on posting.
after eating, i was determined to watch the hockey finals, and, we found a great bar with lots of great beers on tap. i went with bodingtons. i ran into 2 other western pennsylvania guys watching the game too.
since my team was losing, i left in the 3rd period and headed to southpaw. this dimly lit venue with albums on the wall, pinball machines, and a nice stage was about one forth full. it has 2 floors; first floor, and a basement with another bar. in the basement, they televise who is playing upstairs. as the crowd got even smaller for us, friends said lots of people were watching downstairs. those who were there were clapping, and even a couple were dancing. the sound people were great(understatement). they worked very fast, were polite (no attitudes), and were very complimentary and supportive regardless of how few were there. (in our defense, we didn't have the best spot, we're not from around there, and, the place wasn't packed before we got on.) we were even given a free recording after the show. the recording was done very well.
southpaw seems like a great place to see a show. i would highly recommend going there or playing there, and don't forget to tip your soundman.
