The Random Tea Room is among the most delightful secret escapes from the general hipster’d-outness of Northern Liberties.

The interior is well-appointed, a combination of art nouveau, salvaged-then-beautified post-modern junk, and just plain old good taste.  The uninitiated might think this room is just a bit on the busy side, even approaching clutter in places.  But it makes a joyful noise, not an evil din. The lighting is warm, creating a late 19th century air of absinthe drinking, decadent-and-only-sometimes-harmless consumption gone to outer space and come back again.  No fluorescence here.  Not by a long shot.  No neon or bright pumpkin assault, either;  plum, mahogany, and faded springtime green provide the back drop for the urbane intricacies of the knickknacks and curiosities strewn across every surface (most of which might be for sale if you inquire, by the way). All in all, the Random Tea Room’s environment is extremely easy on the eyes and soul,  promotes comfort, relaxation, and conversation.  And the WC is no exception (see the pic).

At the center of all this are the Tea Room’s owners, Rebecca Goldschmidt, and Jor Kane, who have really done their homework. The have clearly gone to great lengths to acquire artisinal tea sfrom all over the world and have taken the time to learn how to brew each tea one according to its own quirks, specifications, and fragilities. A beautifully printed, libretto-like mini-masterpiece of a menu describes each tea in a paragraph or two.

There are plenty of events at the Random Tea Room as well. Ambient DJs, art openings are slated to happen all through the fall and winter. Check out the the website above and then venture to 4th street between Brown and Poplar, and sip sip sip when you can. The ghost of Baudrillard lurks in the corner, and will keep you company or leer at you, depending on his mood. You will not regret.
