comments:

The problem with eating local is, well, winter. For those locavores who haven't dutifully canned and jarred the previous season's bounty, winter means endless plates of turnips and kale, usually bought at the grocery store.

Applachian Vinter, a brand new beer-and-wine shop on the outskirts of Biltmore Village is trying to make local food more appealing year-round by hosting a weekly indoors market. Area farmers and crafters -- who always seem to vanish when tailgate market season ends in December -- have begun to gather at the Saturday morning market, selling their produce, mountain trout, honeys and cheeses to exceedingly grateful shoppers. Participating farmers are pretty happy, too: The market gives them a chance to generate some off-season income (and stay warm while doing so.)

The market's open every Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., when shop owners offer a wine tasting.
