Like frankfurter and weenie, "red hot" is one of those alternate names for hot dogs that nobody seems to use anymore. Maybe that's because the vast majority of pork sausages that Americans devour at ballgames, roast over campfires and cram down their throats in competitive eating contests are pink -- and a very pale pink at that. Not so at Skeeter's, a Wytheville institution that's been serving Santa suit-red dogs since it opened in 1920.

Red dogs remains popular in southeastern Virginia, where Valleydale Packers has been churning out true red hots for nearly a century. Although the company now offers less vibrantly-colored dogs, Skeeter's has stuck with the bright red variety, selling hundreds at its lunch counter each day.

The standard Skeeter's dog is served topped with chili (Valleydale's, of course), onions and mustard, although -- in a nod to hot dog traditions that reign further up the mountains -- slaw's also on the menu.

There's nothing fancy about Skeeter's; The restaurant doesn't have a credit card machine, soda fountain or fryer. It's all about the dogs -- and they're red hot.
