It’s no surprise that outlets for non-digital music are folding faster than you can download the new song-of-the-second. But for die-hard music fans and the retro-fabulous, no ‘pod could replace the scratchy depth of vinyl. Not even New York record stores are impervious to death by digitality, but a walk through the Village will take you to three remaining pillars:

Bleeker Street Records’ subterranean trove is well-stocked with used blues and soul, with a solid selection of new releases. Most notable is their collection of well-priced used 45s in bins near the register, tempting customers like aural penny-candy. Try the dollar bins if you’re feeling lucky.

Stroll a few blocks east and south to Other Music. No used records here, but the variety of new releases is nearly as complete as their CD section. Bright and organized, it feels like regular shopping rather than nosing for truffles—appealing to some, ascetic to others.

Further east you’ll find A1 Records, the hole in the wall DJs adore. The rock section is small, but the walls and racks are packed with soul, hip-hop, reggae and used one-offs you can’t find anywhere else in the city. The handy listening station invites connoisseurs to try before they buy.

Check out one or do the entire lower-Manhattan meander—the Village is brimming with cafes and coffee shops to rouse a second wind of vinyl-hunting.
