comments: I’ll admit it: I’m all thumbs when it comes to Korean food. I’ve lived most of my life in little burgs and mid-sized towns that perpetually turn up on “best places to live” lists, where colleges and bike trails are more prevalent than decent ethnic eateries. And so I’ve never really mastered the intricacies of Korean food. For instance, the hot sauce, invariably presented in a giant red squeeze bottle: Am I going native when I slather my bi bim bop in it? Or is the dousing akin to flooding a porterhouse steak with ketchup? I have no idea. But I know I adore Korean cuisine, which is why I was thrilled to discover the aptly-named Korean Barbecue in Greenville, S.C., at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Asheville is sadly bereft of Korean food, as readers of the alt-weekly where I work never fail to remind me when we annually ask them to name the region’s most-needed food group. If the yukgejang, daeji bulgogi and bokeumbab I sampled are any indication, Korean Barbecue is set on proving how right they are.
Korean Barbecue offers barbecue, of course (done tableside if there are two or more diners in your party). But it also offers a pretty darn good approximation of the ideal ethnic eating experience: The dishes are authentic. The food is fresh. And the menu has pictures. I may just grasp Korean food yet. posted: 03/08/2009 10:51 AM by: tetley
