comments: Indiana this year became just the fifth state to designate an official state pie, summoning bipartisan support to honor the humble sugar cream pie.
Sugar cream, or Hoosier, pie is a close cousin of the shoofly, chess and translucent pies found further south. It’s such a simple sweet treat that its entire recipe is contained in its name: Pie crust. Sugar. Vanilla-flavored cream that, to first-time pie eaters, tastes very much like doughnut filling.
But the very best cooks, like the ones in the kitchen at Highway 38 Diner in New Castle, dust their pies with nutmeg, strongly recalling the dessert’s 19th-century roots. It’s reason enough not to fill up on the little eatery’s homemade potato chips. posted: 06/29/2009 10:57 AM by: tetley
