Peekskill, NY is a great day-trip getaway on the Hudson River, a short Metro-North train ride from New York's Grand Central Station. More than a sleepy village by the station, Peekskill has a burgeoning cultural community with a few surprising finds. At the top of the list has to be Bruised Apple Books & Music, a trove of old tomes, records, and cds where a person could easily spend the better part of a day exploring new worlds between the covers the countless books crammed within. The vast selection is particularly notable because of the quality you'll find; the selection resembles more of a well-curated library collection than an amassed hoard of castaways. There is an entire room dedicated to science fiction and fantasy, as well as the front section of the store that features books on the art, history, and landmarks of the Hudson region. The music section features a great vinyl selection, with many classic albums price so inexpensively you simply can't pass them up--even if you don't own a turntable! The store owners are well-known around town and will call regular customers when a particular book they've been searching for finally arrives. There are not many bookstores like Bruised Apple, but the people of Peekskill are lucky there's at least one.
