A photo of a toothy alligator nestled in hoagie fixins beckons from the wall where we sit: “Louisiana: Have a ‘bite.’” Well, once bitten, forever smitten. Situated an hour outside of New Orleans along the Mississippi River and just around the bend from two historic plantations open year-round to tourists, B & C Seafood draws hundreds of the hungry and just plain curious. A locally owned joint, B & C serves up fresh alligator, hushpuppies, catfish poboys and crawfish stew, but you’ll notice that the locals are always the ones waving their mallets over cafeteria trays steaming with fresh crabs. The walls are pegged with money from all over the world, reminding us that maybe every indie traveler can find a gem even on an already well-beaten path.
